World Record Attempt at National Feast of Lanterns

The Camping and Caravanning Club will be celebrating its prestigious annual camping rally, the National Feast of Lanterns 2011 (NFOL), with a Guinness World Record attempt!


Campers from across the country will join together to attempt to set a new World Record for the largest gathering of people dressed as Robin Hood!

The current World Record was set at Castle Green in Nottingham, in 2008 and stands at 1,119 Robins.

The record attempt will form part of the Club's national rally which will be held at Newark Showground in the Central Counties Region from Thursday, August 25 to Monday, August 29.

The rally will celebrate the country's history and traditions with a ?Best of British' theme.

Free entertainment will run throughout the weekend with live shows, bands, parlour games and even a ?Britain's Got Talent' competition.

Children will also love building sandcastles on the NFOL purpose built seaside playground ? complete with real sand!

Cath Henson, Chair of the NFOL 2011 Organising Committee has been working hard, together with her team, to deliver a showpiece event and she said: "We're delighted by the brilliant response from Club members and we're positive it's going to be an event to remember.

"This year, we have really focused on the traditional elements of the NFOL and have organised a spectacular lighting up show and a torch-lit parade for all campers to enjoy.

"So sit back, light up your unit and enjoy the entertainment.?

The Club's Director General, Robert Louden, is also looking forward to the event and added: "The Central Counties Region has done such a fantastic job of organising what is such a highly anticipated event in the camping and caravanning calendar.?

The rally will be officially opened by Club President David Bellamy at 6.30pm on the Arena stage on Friday, August 26.

The rally is only open to Camping and Caravanning Club members.

Anyone can go to Tromso, Norway. Anyone can go anywhere, actually--that's what I like the most about travel. There aren't restrictions. Get up and go if you want to go. Take pictures and make videos documenting the things you see and experiences that will, undoubtedly, mold you. That's what Dave Pinke has done. Dave Pinke is a traveler, video-taker, all-around cool guy from New York. He's spent much of his time over the last few years gallivanting across the globe and putting together splendid little videos in honor of the places he visits. Complete with fun clips and appropriate music, his travel videos are some of my favorite. They dive deep into his personal experiences and by the end of each video, I feel like I've walked in his footsteps.

In case you didn't catch wind of it, Outside Lands went down successfully a couple of weeks ago. Outside Lands Music and Arts Festival is held every year in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park. If you haven't ever heard of the festival, that's probably because it's still pretty new. The first edition of Outside Lands was in 2008 and brought in 40,000-60,000 attendees per day. With clear support and demand, Outside Lands has continued putting on a memorable show each year since 2008. Geared toward the green movement, Outside Lands is not only a big summer travel destination spot for music-lovers, but it's also considered to be one of the most eco-friendly music festivals in the USA.

Stepping Outside of Manhattan for a Long Island Experience

For the urbane traveler, New York City is thought to be the apogee of culture and excitement. But during late summer and early fall, everyone - even visitors - could use a respite from the sweaty, crowded, concrete jungle. And there's no better place to visit than the city's equally alluring neighbor, Long Island.

One of Long Island's greatest draws is its southern shoreline. The best place to find roaring swells and superb fishing is at the end of the South Fork in Montauk. If you're a beachgoer who prefers sun to surf, Montauk offers that, too. Check out the Montauk Point Lighthouse, which looks like a precarious beacon sitting at the end of the world. There are plenty of rooms in Montauk, but if you're a camper, Hither Hills Campground puts you closer to the beach than any oceanfront property. While you're there, stop for a savory bowl of New England clam chowder at the isolated restaurant Lunch in Amagansett. Also on the menu is the lobster roll, the now ubiquitous sandwich that Lunch claims to have originated. (Traveler beware: Before Labor Day, accommodations, even campsites, are hard to find, and traffic on Friday or Saturday out to the South Fork can be nightmarish.)

If you want a blend of the island's high-priced Hamptons and relaxed Montauk (and desire a much shorter ride from Manhattan), jump into your car or ride the Long Island Railroad to the ferry stations of Bay Shore, Sayville, or Patchogue and sail over to car-free Fire Island. (Thursday to Saturday, you can hydrate at Blue Point Brewery in Patchogue, just a few blocks from the train station.) On Fire Island, plum trees and tall grass grow wild and create an idyllic vibe. The beaches are pristine and wild deer roam the dunes. If a peaceful day is your goal, head to the sleepy villages of Kismet or Saltaire, but if you're looking to party, make Ocean Beach your destination. For a repast in OB, have a bite at Island Mermaid, next to the ferry, and enjoy views across the expansive Great South Bay. Sip down your meal with Fire Island's indigenous libation, rocket fuel-a hopped-up piña colada.

For the more adventurous traveler, skip the ferry ride and drive to Robert Moses State Park. Find parking at field 5 and bike east, one mile past the lighthouse, onto Fire Island. Though at first the path is pocked with rocks and sand traps, once you reach the threshold of residential Kismet there are easy-to-traverse concrete and boardwalk paths. (You can also walk into Kismet and rent a bike in town.) After enjoying the quiet beaches, continue riding to the end of Atlantique, just a few miles down, and walk the mile along the beach to OB. The village of OB doesn't allow bike riding on weekends. Further east and accessible by water taxi, or by ferry from the mainland, is a verdant sunken forest at Sailors Haven that is worth exploring.

Appalachian Trail Museum's Rattle Snakes Program

The thought of encountering a rattle snake terrifies most people. But to Andy Wolfe, a life-long student of timber rattlers, this reptile is a misunderstood and often abused species.


On Sunday, August 28, at 1 p. m., he will present a program - "Rattle Snakes: Friend or Foe" -- at the Appalachian Trail Museum in Pine Grove Furnace State Park in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. He will discuss the habitats and habits of timber rattlers and why they are protected under specific regulations by the Pennsylvania Fish & Boat Commission.

"Andy's presentation will include photographs and information applicable to the everyday hiker and camper, as well as a brief natural history of this fascinating species of the Appalachian Mountains," said Gwen Loose, program chair for the Appalachian Trail Museum.

Throughout the summer, the Appalachian Trail Museum has offered programs that include:

Story-telling, songs and activities for children
Arts and crafts on the Appalachian Trail (photography, painting, handcrafts)
Natural features of the Appalachian Trail
Trail maintenance techniques
Hiker skills and equipment - past and present
Shelter building
History of Appalachian Trail maintaining clubs
Pioneer hiker profiles and why they are important
First person hiking experiences and accomplishments

The programs are free, open to the public and held at the museum on Sundays at 1 p.m. A complete list of programs is posted on the Appalachian Trail Museum website at http://www.atmuseum.org.

Located in a 200-year-old, restored grist mill in historic Pine Grove Furnace State Park and at the midway point of the 2,181-mile-long Appalachian Trail, the museum is across from the Pine Grove General Store on Pennsylvania Route 233 in Cumberland County. Pine Grove Furnace was named the State Park of the Year for 2010 by the Pennsylvania Parks and Forests Foundation.
