Flags without countries

flags
Do you recognize this flag? Neither did I. It's the flag of Lapland. Lapland isn't a country, but a region in northern Norway, Sweden, Finland, and Russia where the Sámi (Lapps) live. Only Norway recognizes this flag, and it's flown throughout the country on February 6 to celebrate Sámi National Day.

I discovered this flag in Aberystwyth, Wales, of all places, while walking along the seaside promenade. It was flying proudly in the stiff breeze and caught my attention because I'd never seen it before. Then I noticed a whole line of flags I'd never seen before. A sign explained that because the Welsh so rarely see their flag flying in foreign countries, they decided to fly the flags of various European regions that are seeking autonomy or independence. The display of flags without countries was an interesting lesson in European politics and history. Several are shown in the gallery.

On the Fast Track with Richard Petty at Walt Disney World

I'm very interested in loud cars that go really fast, even if I still don't understand NASCAR. Earlier this summer, I drove my road trip ride around the speedway in Watkins Glen. As much fun as it was--lots!--I was itching to get a vehicle up to triple-digit speeds. Near the Magic Kingdom in Orlando, I had that chance, at the Richard Petty Driving Experience.

National Parks Have a Lot to Offer

You can't always measure a country's treasures by the size of its bank accounts. Sometimes a country's riches are better measured by the length of its rivers, the height of its mountains and its priceless historical places.

Our national parks were created to protect and showcase such treasures. With close to 400 destinations, chances are there is a park near you. You can find the closest park by visiting the National Park Service website and typing in your zip code. Below you'll find information on some of the country's outstanding parks, located in different parts of the country.

Glacier National Park

Located in the northwestern corner of Montana, Glacier National Park draws about 2 million people per year. You can explore 700 miles of hiking trails, take a guided tour on horseback, or set up your tent in one of the 13 campgrounds available. One of the main attractions is the Going-to-the-Sun Road, which offers spectacular views from the road that snakes through the edge of the mountains.

Sequoia National Park

Sequoia National Park, which is located in Central California, is known as the Land of Giants because of the size of its mountains, the depths of its canyons and for having the world's largest trees. Activities vary depending on the time of year, but it's generally ideal for camping, hiking, horseback riding and rock-climbing. You can also ski during the winter and enjoy other winter activities.

Acadia National Park

In the northeastern corner of the country, in the state of Maine, you'll find Acadia National Park. This park features a dynamic ecosystem that includes mountains, coastlines, forests and lakes. Here you can take a bike ride on the 45-mile old carriage road. It also has about 125 miles of historic hiking trails. The most popular activities include bicycling, boating and horseback riding. It's also known for climbing and fishing.

Great Smoky Mountains

Some would say that the Grand Canyon is the most famous of the U.S. national parks. But it's not the most visited. That would be the Great Smoky Mountain National Park, which draws about 10 million visitors per year. It's located along the border between North Carolina and Tennessee, and it has a little bit of everything: panoramic views, waterfalls, horseback riding, bicycling and plenty of campsites.

Arches National Park

Arches National Park is famous for its 2,000 or so natural sandstone arches and for its impressive variety of rock formations which are millions of years in the making. This park is located in Utah and is a favorite of photography aficionados as well as hikers and bicyclists.

Badlands National Park

North Dakota is home to Badlands National Park, a rugged area of about 250,000 acres which features geological deposits rich with fossil beds. Although the fossil beds are the main attraction for many people, others come here to get an up close look at the many animals that call this park home, including bison, deer and Bighorn sheep. At the Badlands National Park, you might find that not all of the fun is on the ground. Dark nights give way to sensational views of the stars and galaxies, so feel free to bring your telescope or participate in some of the presentations offered by the park's rangers.

USA.gov and GobiernoUSA.gov are the U.S. Government's official web portals in English and Spanish, and part of the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA).

Check out http://www.nps.gov/index.htm for more info.

Nomadic Matt is giving away free airline tickets to readers

Travel blogger Nomadic Matt is celebrating five years of globetrotting by gifting his readers with free airplane tickets - including one for an around-the-world trip. The transient sightseer accumulated 350,000 miles on American Airlines over the past year, and decided he's going to give away the tickets because he wants to make other people's dream a reality.

One lucky winner will get a 'Oneworld Explorer' round-the-world ticket, which has a stipulation that the traveler must touch down on at least three continents. Not bad! A second place winner will get a roundtrip business class ticket to anywhere in the world, while a third place winner will receive two economy class tickets to the destination of their choice (again, anywhere in the world).

The best part is that contest entrants don't need to make a fancy video, write a blog, or go through a time consuming voting process. All you have to do is become a fan of Nomadic Matt on Facebook, which will allow you to see a contest form. Fill out the form and choose where you want to go, and if you win (a winner will be chosen at random), Nomadic Matt will send you there! It's that easy.

FAA stops collecting airfare taxes -- and the airlines cash in

Recent budget woes in the legislative branch of our US government have been creating a cascade of disruptions, and the most recent hiccup involves the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Without proper agreement on a fiscal plan moving forward, the government has been forced to shut down a portion of the agency, most notably the section that collects taxes on our domestic airplane tickets.

Those taxes account for a modest percentage of each flight, roughly between 5 and 10%, and when travelers caught wind that the taxes would be discounted, they saw the silver lining of the shutdown as being a temporary sale on domestic tickets.

As planned, the FAA shutdown took place at midnight this morning, but the savings have barely matured. What happened?

Turns out, some of the airlines also realized the gap in price difference and decided to make that up by increasing their fares. So rather than passing the tax savings along to customers, they're greedily taking the margin for themselves.

Not all airlines have reached into our wallets, however, apparently Virgin America has not only refused to increase fares but they've turned the event into a bit of public promotion. Last night the airline had a countdown to tax-free bookings on their sites and as promised, the fares have stayed low. Similarly, United appears to be keeping its fares in place.

On the flip side of the coin? US Airways, American and JetBlue seem to be the leaders in ripping off their consumers. AP has a bit more info if you want to become even more disappointed.

Elvis road trip has more stops than Graceland

Elvis road tripThemed road trips can take on a whole different meaning than simply loading up the car and heading out on the highway. Choosing to stop along the way at everything from each National Park for a photo by the entrance sign, every major sports venue and coming away with a home-team ball cap or all airports along the way just to watch planes take off can transform a simple drive into a memorable road trip of a lifetime. Whatever your interest, a well-planned and themed road trip can be a lot of fun. Even a tour devoted to Elvis Presley can work.

The Musical Instrument Museum (MIM) in Phoenix, Arizona will be All Shook Up next month with the introduction of an Elvis Presley exhibit in the museum's newly renovated Artist Gallery on August 6th.

Guests will get to experience The King of Rock 'n' Roll through a collection of personal items, clothing, and musical instruments. One highlight of the exhibit will be the priceless 1975 Martin D-28 acoustic guitar that Elvis played during his 1977 tours, including his last concert on June 26 in Indianapolis, Indiana. In addition to displaying it, MIM has been chosen by Elvis Presley Enterprises to restore the guitar to the condition in which Elvis last played it.

Happy Trails: Online Guide to Great Hikes

Ever wonder about the best hikes, sites and activities in America's national parks? Or are you unsure about how you should plan your next visit to a national park or what you should pack? The National Park Foundation, the official charity of America's National Parks, is here to help! Today, NPF unveils Happy Trails, a new guide highlighting 25 unforgettable national park hikes spanning all levels of expertise. Visit www.nationalparks.org to get your FREE copy today.

In addition, NPF is proud to feature, Trail Talk, where park fans can ask their questions to America's national park rangers. Done in partnership with Merrell, the interactive interview series with national park rangers can help you plan the perfect national park adventure. The public is invited to submit questions for the Trail Talk series via the NPF and Merrell Facebook pages, which are www.facebook.com/nationalpark and www.facebook.com/merrell, respectively.

The National Park Foundation's Happy Trails guide invites Americans to not only take an active role in preserving their parks, but to also take time to explore and enjoy some of the spectacular hikes America has to offer, some of which include:

Big Thicket National Preserve, Texas
Beaver Slide, 1.5 mile loop
The short walk passes by several ponds formed by old beaver dams. Ethereal cypress trees rise from still waters, their knees poking the pond's surface.

Everglades National Park, Florida
Anhinga, .8 miles roundtrip
Starting at the Royal Palm Visitor Center, the wheelchair-accessible path winds through sawgrass marsh. Wildlife viewing abounds, especially in winter. Look for alligators, turtles, herons, egrets, and, of course, anhingas.

Point Reyes National Seashore, California
Coast-Laguna, 5 mile loop
Experience some of these varied landscapes on the Coast Trail via the Laguna Trail. Laguna Trail leads through coastal scrub. Look for Anna's hummingbird, which feeds year-round on Indian paintbrush and bush monkey flower.

For a complete list of great hikes, visit www.nationalparks.org/explore/download-center. There, visitors will also have access to other great resources from the National Park Foundation including the "Owner's Guide" ? a comprehensive guidebook to America's nearly 400 national parks.

Turkish tea truck offers Istanbul version of food truck trend

tea truckThe food truck craze is nothing new to many Americans. Long a popular foodie option in New York, Los Angeles, and even Cleveland, it's a food trend that's constantly evolving to bring new ideas and tastes to the, er, table. The Turkish food blog Istanbul Eats, who launched a book version last year and now offer food tours of the city, spotted a very local version of the mobile eatery trend along the Golden Horn. They posted a few photos of Mehmet Abi's çay kamyon (that's tea truck in Turkish) on their Facebook page this week, complete with a seating area for sipping a hot glass. You can find Mehmet's truck parked by the Karakoy mosque near the hardware market at the Galata Bridge, ask around for the Per?embe Pazar? (Thursday market) to find it.

Turkish çay is already quite mobile. Around Istanbul, you'll spot men carrying trays of glasses to deliver to local businesses, the empty glasses are later collected or returned to the çay shops. And while coffee chains like Starbucks and Gloria Jean's are quite popular in Turkey, you won't find Turks drinking çay out of paper cups, the honor system works well for to-go orders as well.

While the food truck craze as we know it has yet to hit Istanbul, Turkish food is going mobile in other places. Pera Turkish Tacos launched late last year outside the former Tavern on the Green space in Manhattan and recently became the first food cart in the city to get a liquor license.
