The Ten Most "Thrilling" Airports

thrilling airports

One of our favorite travel sites, Airfarewatchdog, today released their list of the world's ten most "thrilling" airports. From hairpin turns to to landings over sunbathers to runways accessible only at low tide, these landings and takeoffs aren't for the faint of heart.

"Globe-trotting frequent flyers probably have their own favorite 'thrilling' airports that might not be on this list. Anyone who once flew into the old Hong Kong airport remembers literally being able to see what people in adjacent apartment buildings were watching on their TV sets. And let's not forget the amusement park ride that is St. Barts' tiny airport. How fun is that!" Airfarewatchdog president George Hobica said.

The picks include:

  • Toncontin International Airport, Tegucigalpa, Honduras: To line up with the runway, planes must make a last-second 45-degree turn.
  • Princess Juliana International Airport, Philipsburg, St. Maarten: Planes fly mere feet over sunbathers.
  • Queenstown Airport, Queenstown, New Zealand: On descent, passengers may feel a sudden drop in altitude caused by downdrafts.
  • Gustaf III Airport, St. Jean, St. Barts: "Small airports, short runways, and terrain are the three whammies of flying," says Pilot Anonymous. Gustaf III Airport has all three.
  • Sitka Rocky Gutierrez Airport, Sitka, Alaska: Unpredictable weather means that pilots need to take caution of boulders and other debris that can wash onto the runway.
  • Courcheval Airport, Courcheval, France: A short 1,722-foot runway, and Courcheval has a steep incline (which slows planes down on landing and speeds them up on takeoff).
  • Catalina Airport (Airport in the Sky), Avalon, California: The sole runway is raised in the middle, so much so that pilots can't see where it ends.
  • LaGuardia Airport, New York, New York: Before landing, pilots make a number of white-knuckle turns, one of which is 180-degrees around Citi Field.
  • Tenzing-Hillary Airport (Lukla Airport), Lukla, Nepal: This is 9,000 feet high in the Himalayas, and pilots have one shot to land, as the terrain rules out a fly-around.
  • Barra Airport, Barra, Scotland: It's always a beach landing, and runways form when the tide goes out.

  • But we want to hear from you - what did they miss?

The Ten Most "Thrilling" Airports originally appeared on Gadling on Tue, 28 Jun 2011 14:30:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

Black Bears Part of Alabama's Ecosystem

Recent sightings of black bears in different parts of Alabama have many wondering if the animal's presence in the state is increasing. The heart of bear country in Alabama consists of piney woods hills, titi thickets and river swamps. This has been the case for hundreds of years. In the midst of these natural habitats is a relatively new landscape that is becoming increasingly prevalent--cleared land with stone and wooden dwellings. The occupants of these habitats are humans. People who move into these once rural settings are unaware and unfamiliar with the native wildlife that continues to exist in surrounding woodlands, including black bears.

The remaining core habitats of the protected black bears in Alabama are located primarily in Mobile, Washington, and Baldwin counties. Bears once roamed throughout the state before the alpha predators (people). Based on current and verified reports of sightings, sign, road kills, game camera images as well as movement patterns of radioed bears, some animals are thought to be establishing home ranges in other regions of Alabama. Changes in bear range and movements may be the result of a combination of factors such as altered habitats due to development and a natural growth in the density of black bears.

What this all means is an increased chance of bear-human encounters or conflicts. And in these outlying, suburban/rural settings, the "back yard? of homes is where the two meet. If you live in bear country, the key is to educate yourself on how some human actions may alter the behavior of black bears. Most conflicts are related to the animal's search for food. Bears have an acute sense of smell and if one unwittingly leaves "groceries? outside, bears may come to investigate, eat, and return for more. Sources of food include deer feeders, pet food, trash receptacles, and even bird feeders. Although black bears in Alabama typically display a "flight response? around people, bears that continue to get an easy meal near your home may keep coming back. Bears that are conditioned to associate food with people may lose that natural fear, which raises the bar on possible aggressive encounters.

Most potential bear conflicts can be avoided through implementing fairly simple preventative measures. First, if you do not want bears in close proximity of your home, then discontinue any feeding of wildlife, period! And if you live in a neighborhood, all the nearby residents need to abide by this recommendation for it to be most effective. Second, do not leave any uneaten pet food and the bowls outside for any length of time. Third, place trash outside on the day of pickup and not before. Store trash inside the residence or keep it in an enclosed shed or garage. Double-bag your garbage and periodically disinfect trash cans. Sometimes, protective fencing around other sources such as gardens may be necessary.

Keep in mind that if you live or move into bear habitat, the animals will most likely remain in the area, but by following a preventative strategy, most of the close-to-home encounters can be avoided. The implementation of the previously mentioned preventative measures may be all that is needed to avoid conflicts. Trapping and relocating of bears in Alabama is often unproductive. Moving a nuisance bear to another area may end up just moving the nuisance somewhere else. Also, bears have an excellent homing instinct and have been documented traveling up to 400 miles from the relocation site. So, the relocated bear may end up back at the original trap site.

The Alabama Black Bear Alliance (ABBA) is a conservation organization that represents a broad coalition of diverse interests with the goal of working cooperatively and voluntarily for the conservation of the black bear in Alabama through research, education and habitat management. Much of the information in this article including preventative conflict strategies is a result of ABBA's educational efforts. Visit their website at www.alabamablackbearalliance.org to learn more about living in bear country. Bear sightings can also be reported and submitted electronically from this website. Also, please report all bear sightings to your local Alabama Division of Wildlife and Freshwater officials.

For more information, contact Steven W. Barnett, Certified Wildlife Biologist, Alabama Division of Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries, 30571 Five Rivers Boulevard, Spanish Fort, AL 36527; phone 251-626-5474.

Scared to visit Mexico? How about Panama?

PanamaNews reports of ongoing crime and attacks on travelers in Mexico have land vacationers looking for alternative destinations and cruise ships headed in the opposite direction. Sure, those beheadings, murders and shootings are happening in remote areas of Mexico for the most part, but stories of such activity combined with travel warnings by trusted sources are enough to shift our focus elsewhere.

A look farther south, past Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua finds the welcoming and relatively-safe-compared-to-Mexico nations of Costa Rica and Panama.

Checking in first with the US Department of State for travel warnings or alerts, Costa Rica has the higher rating of the two.

"Adventure tourism is popular in Costa Rica, and many companies offer white-water rafting, bungee jumping, jungle canopy tours, SCUBA diving, and other outdoor attractions. U.S. citizens are urged to use caution in selecting adventure tourism companies." says the Department of State, adding "The Government of Costa Rica regulates and monitors the safety of these companies, and registered tourism companies with operating permits must meet safety standards and have insurance coverage."

Still, the murder of an Argentinian tourist on Thursday raises the question of security and safety for tourism in the Central American country which receives every year more than 2 million visitors.

It seems there is danger anywhere if we look hard enough.

Five ways to lighten your load when traveling on business and pleasure

traveling on businessIf you've gone on a long business trip, there's a good chance you've tacked a vacation onto the front or back of it. Why not? You're already on the road. If business takes you (or close to) an interesting place, it makes sense to get the most out of your experience - and the plane ticket you've already purchased. Unfortunately, this can be a pain sometimes. You wind up with a lot of luggage to drag around, which can be uncomfortable at best.

Don't let this problem get in your way!

There are a number of ways you can change how you pack to make your business-and-pleasure combo easier to manage. Let's take a look at five of them:

Photo of the day - street art in Taiwan

    photo of the day
There's a lot happening in this photo: some street art, an intriguing flavor of popsicle, cool sneakers, flammable substances near a lit cigarette, the Asian art of effortless squatting. Overall it's a very interesting street scene, captured by Flickr user marisoleta in Taipei, Taiwan. Looking at more of her photos, it seems like a fun destination, full of temples, tall buildings, and weird foods we all love to photograph on our travels. It's always great when a travel photo makes us want to learn more about a place.

Have you taken any good street scenes to get us curious about a destination? Upload 'em to the Gadling Flickr pool and we may use it for a future photo of the day.

Five ways to enjoy the midnight sun in Oulu

    midnight sun oulu

As the days grew longer this spring I began to fantasize about spending summer solstice under the midnight sun. I recalled with excitement that dulled buzz that comes from not getting enough sleep when it's constantly light out, a gently energizing sensation so unlike sheer exhaustion. Last week I succumbed to the urge and flew off to the city of Oulu in Finland.

Why Oulu? As is usually the case, my decision was determined by budgetary bottom line. In late May I sat down and looked at all of my options for experiencing the true midnight sun. My research indicated that only a location at or above the 64th parallel north would do the trick. That left a number of decently trafficked airports a single layover away from London: Luleå and Kiruna in Sweden; Bodø, Narvik, and Tromsø in Norway; Oulu and Rovaniemi in Finland.

The cheapest fare I found from London to any of these northern cities was to Oulu via Riga on airBaltic, for €223. I snapped it up.

Oulu, the sixth biggest city in Finland--the fourth biggest if the cities of the greater Helsinki Metropolitan region are counted as one--is a technologically-savvy, bicycling-mad place. The city is saturated by free wi-fi and laced with cycling paths. In the summer, Oulu pulses with restrained energy. Even on a quiet summer night there are plenty of people about, biking, socializing, and swatting away mosquitoes.

In short, summer in Oulu is spectacular and atmospheric. It is short and locals enjoy it fully. Here are five ways to maximize a visit to Oulu during the summer season.
